Interviews and
communication skills training

Interviews

We aim to interview 30 patients, 20 informal caregivers and 20 healthcare professionals. We hope a range of people will take part, giving us a broad understanding of experiences.

Interviews will be done over the phone, or optional video call for healthcare professionals, with experienced qualitative researchers based at SHORE-C.

Interviewees will dictate the length of interviews, but we anticipate they will last between 15-45 minutes.
For patients and caregivers, interviews will explore the beliefs, experiences and understanding of:

  • The role of drainage in refractory ascites
  • Recruitment, participation, and intervention
  • End of life care and available support
  • Practicalities and barriers involved in either intervention

We will interview healthcare professionals, involved across the patient care pathway, including hospital and community teams. Interview topics will include the:

  • Decision-making process for LTAD/LVP
  • Perceived impact of the intervention for the patient
  • Practical implications of intervention

Communications skills training

Communication skills training will be provided by researchers from SHORE-C with input from our PPI group.

Healthcare professionals’ reluctance to initiate timely end-of-life discussions with patients came up repeatedly in the feasibility study as a potential barrier to recruitment. As part of the REDUCe2 study we are offering training to help researchers with this important challenge.

Four separate workshops will run throughout the study duration across different areas of the UK. These will include video scenarios, role-play, and in-depth discussions. The workshops focus on building an open conversation about the challenges faced in this setting and how people approach these. We hope these discussions will raise awareness of hidden challenges while reducing some of the barriers associated with patient recruitment.

These workshops are designed to discuss the REDUCe2 study along with wider challenges in this cohort. Therefore, the knowledge and communication skills gained can be applied to broader ongoing clinical practice.
